Did you know that Frank Lloyd Wright designed a service station and that it's right here in good old Minnesota? It's an interesting story. For most of his career, Frank Lloyd championed his idea of a utopian auto-centric city of the future he called Broadacre. The service station would be “the future city in embryo,” around which he expected a neighborhood and other city buildings would grow. Seems silly now but it was an automobile-centric time.
His city plans never came to be but he did finally manage to get the gas station built. Why in Minnesota? Well, he had a former client that lived in Cloquet who was big in the petroleum business. He managed to convince him to build this gas station and a just year later Frank Lloyd passed away, perhaps his life goals met? Anyway, it's a worthwhile but little known "must do" stop on the way to Duluth and the North Shore from the Twin Cities. Don't miss it!
