Most who have visited Canal Park in Duluth and walked along the waterfront boardwalk have admired this stoic lighthouse. It stands at the end of a long 1700 foot concrete breakwater pier reaching into Lake Superior, marking the entrance to the canal leading to the shipyards. Built in 1910 the steel plate-encased iron tower is about 40 feet tall. On a clear night the light can be seen from 11 miles away. Interestingly, the lighthouse's light was originally white, instead of the navigationally-correct red. This was to distinguish itself from the red lights visible in the red light district of St Croix Avenue, home to many a brothel and rough-edged bar. Beware the sirens of Duluth!
